Policy and Advocacy
As the premier international organization dedicated to young children with exceptionalities and their families, the Division for Early Childhood (DEC), a subdivision of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), is uniquely positioned to gather member and community input. This collective voice sends a strong message to political leadership and other stakeholders regarding proposed, amended, existing, and/or new legislation and regulations that have the potential to impact the children and families served through early intervention and early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) as well as the professionals that serve them.
DEC provides members with access to numerous advocacy and political involvement opportunities such as
grassroots organizing, networking, and action-taking on issues through the Children’s Action Network (CAN);
the targeted work and collaboration of the Policy and Advocacy Committee;
leadership opportunities at the Subdivision level.
Through each of these avenues, and together with the Governmental Relations Consultant, DEC has the power to motivate non-political stakeholders to political and legislative action and to pave the way to the improvement of systems-level issues including the funding, implementation, and accessibility of services in EI/ECSE. From the Legislative Action Center to the weekly Policy Insider Blog, we have the tools to teach our members about policy, create dialogue with policymakers, and energize a network of members around the globe.
